Supreme Court drafts roadmap on judicial reform

Supreme Court has announced that a roadmap to reform the judiciary will be publicized on Wednesday.

The roadmap was drafted based on the discussions from the Judicial Conference on Judicial Independence and Reform held in February.

During the conference, participants had presented papers on the challenges faced in the judicial system and ways on which the challenges can be overcome. 18 papers were presented by different experts, including former Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed. Papers were also presented by former Prosecutor General Ahmed Muizzu, Chief Judge of Criminal Court Ahmed Hailam, Attorney General’s Office and the Prosecutor General’s Office, in addition to High Court Judge Shuaib Zakariyya, Chancellor of the Judicial Academy Ahmed Majid and Judicial Administrator Dr. Abdulla Nazeer.

Family Court Judge Hassan Saeed presented a report after researching the papers presented at the conference, identifying and recommending ways to resolve the issues faced by the judiciary.

While a special five-year roadmap is being published, Agenda19 of main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) lists several ways in which the judiciary can be reformed. It is believed that the recommendations on Agenda19 will be implemented with the commencement of the newly elected 19th Parliament.
