Smoking on Male' streets to be prohibited

Male’ City Council has announced that smoking on the streets of Male; City will be prohibited soon.

The decision was made at a council meeting held on Wednesday, with the unanimous agreement of all seven council members in attendance.

Council member Hussain Shareef revealed to AVAS that the decision will be implemented six months from now, after enacting necessary policies after discussion with Ministry of Health and Maldives Police Service.

A law was enacted earlier that prohibited smoking in public spaces. However. the law could not be enforced effectively. A law is currently in place that fines smokers by MVR 500 if caught smoking in prohibited areas.

While the Tobacco Control Act was approved in 2010, the Tobacco General Act was implemented in 2012.
