Families of victims urge new Parliament to empower commission

The families of missing journalist Ahmed Rilwan and murdered blogger Yameen Rasheed has called on the 19th Parliament to empower the presidential commission investigating murders and enforced disappearances.

The president of the commission, Husnu-Al-Suood has previously spoken on the challenges faced by the commission due to the parliament’s failure to pass the bill granting sweeping powers to the commission.

In a statement released by the families of Rilwan and Yameen, they noted that the government should prioritize ensuring justice for the families of the victims as promised during the presidential campaign.

“We believe that the government should prioritize ensuring us justice as promised during the presidential election. We call upon the President and other relevant authorities to make all efforts necessary without hesitation”, read the statement.
