Indian PM set to deliver speech at Maldives parliament

The parliament has approved for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to deliver a speech at the parliament during his visit to the Maldives next month.

Speaker of the parliament, former president Mohamed Nasheed during Tuesday’s sitting announced that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had requested for the PM to deliver a speech at the parliament during his visit.

During the second sitting held on Wednesday, all 80 members present voted in favor of requesting PM Modi to deliver a speech at the parliament, with members stating that it would be an honor to have an influential leader such as Modi addressing at the parliament.

Although some members of the opposition noted that the bid to strengthen relations with one country should not diminish the relations with other nations, all members voted in favor of the Indian PM addressing the parliament.

PM Modi will be traveling to Maldives on June 7 as his first foreign visit after being re-elected as PM for a second term in the recent Indian General Election. The Indian PM visited the Maldives last November for the swearing in ceremony of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
