Area designated in Hulhumale' to relocate embassies

Embassies in capital Male’ will be relocated to areas in Hulhumale’ Phase Two, AVAS has learnt.

An official from Foreign Ministry revealed that the government intends to relocate the embassies to Hulhumale’ in order to reduce congestion in Male’.

The official told AVAS that a plot has already been allocated for the construction of the new Indian Embassy, the foundation of which would be laid by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his upcoming state visit to the archipelago.

While it has also been reported that a 30,000 acre-foot has been allocated for accommodation of foreign diplomats, the size of the area has not been officially confirmed.

The official revealed that the land will be issued to foreign embassies only if requested by the country. Arrangement for plots will be made for the current embassies of China, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Sri Lanka in Male’ city upon request, the official informed.

“We are experiencing space limitations in Male’. Many countries are requesting to establish their embassies in the Maldives. Therefore, the government plans to allocate land for embassies in the same area. This would make it easier to monitor the security of the embassies”, he said.
