'JSC's move to ignore Supreme Court order seeks to destroy the judicial system' - PNC

eople's National Congress (PNC) has stated that the Judicial Service Commission (JSC)'s decision to ignore Supreme Court's stay order regarding Judge Abdulla Didi's suspension is intended to destroy the judiciary system of the Maldives.

Judicial Service Commission (JSC) on Wednesday made the decision to suspend Supreme Court Justice Abdulla Didi over bribery allegations after which the Supreme Court issued a stay order on the suspension, ordering all authorities not to take any action against Didi.

However, the JSC called an emergency meeting and made the decision to maintain their initial suspension despite the Supreme Court order.

In a statement released by PNC on Saturday night, they criticized JSC's decision to challenge the Supreme Court, and stated that JSC's decision is unconstitutional and transgresses the boundaries of law.

"The statement released following the JSC sitting was issued in violation of the constitution, in order to destroy the country's judicial system and create unrest in the country in the name of reform. This is a very backward act.", read PNC's statement.

Strictly condemning JSC's actions, PNC's statement further read that they believe the ruling government is working to seek revenge and is pursuing vendettas against particular individuals.

President of PNC, Abdul Raheem Abdulla also criticized JSC's decision, stating that the JSC's decision to ignore the Supreme Court's decision does not nullify the top court's decision in any way. He further noted that the constitution gives jurisdiction for the Supreme Court to hear constitutional disputes, being the highest authority in the Maldives. Therefore, there are no restrictions on Judge Didi in resuming his duties, he added.
