Tourist arrivals increase by 11%

Number of tourist arrivals have increased by 11% with an upsurge in Indian tourists during the last month.

Speaking to the press on Wednesday, Tourism Minister Ali Waheed said the country has been witnessing an exponential increment in the number tourist arrivals since the new government began administration.

The government's goal is to maintain the rising numbers throughout the year, said the Minister.

Statistics revealed by the Tourism Ministry show that 103,022 tourists visited the Maldives during May. This is an increase of 10.9% compared to the same period last month. While 749,114 tourists have visited the Maldives since the beginning of the year until the end of May, this is an increase of 18.4% compared to the previous year.

The largest number of tourists to have arrived last month were from China while the second most number of tourists having arrived from Italy.

The number of tourist arrivals have been increasing month by month since the beginning of the year. While a 6,3% increase was identified in January, the percentage increased by 16% the following month. A record increase of 36% was recorded during April.
