'Prison officers engaged in use of excessive force' - Home Ministry

Ministry of Home Affairs have stated that correctional officers had engaged in the excessive use of force during Thursday's unrest at Maafushi Prison.

An Inspector from Correctional Service immediately visited the prison following the disturbance and investigated the matter, said the Ministry.

It was found out that an inmate had assaulted a prison officer, and excessive force was used by guards to control the situation. The incident will be investigated further and necessary actions will be taken, the Ministry said.

Maldives Correctional Service on Thursday confirmed that an assault had taken place at the Maafushi Prison, where an inmate attacked and injured a jail officer. The weapon used for attack has been recovered and normalcy has been restored at the Maafushi prison, said Corrections.

The details of the incident and the extent of the injuries sustained by the officer were not revealed.

However, it has been reported that a metal rod was used to assault the officer while the inmate was being transferred to another cell.

Meanwhile, the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) have stated that they are probing the incident.
