Home Minister Imran Abdulla has ordered the suspension of Emergency Support Group (ESG) Commander of Maafushi Prison until investigations into the recent unrest that occurred at the prison is concluded.
Speaking to the media after visiting the jail to assess its condition, Minister Imran said he has ordered Maldives Correctional Service for the immediate suspension of the ESG Commander until further notice.
According to the prison rules, the Emergency Support Group are to immediately take over the situation in case of emergency. The ESG team will be in charge of the jail until the emergency in managed and under control.
"The ESG commander will be in charge from the moment an emergency is announced until the situation is resolved. Therefore, we are placing him under suspension until the investigation is concluded and I have informed accordingly to Corrections CP. The suspension will now be in effect", said Minster Imran.
Commisioner of Prisons Abdulla Munaz have since tweeted that the ESG Commander of the Maafushi Prison has been placed under suspension as his actions contradicted the due procedure.
An unrest that occurred at Maafushi Prison last Thursday injured several inmates and Correction's officers. Home Ministry has confirmed that prison officers had engaged in excessive use of force to gain control of the situation. The ministry earlier assured that the incident will be investigated, and necessary action will be taken against those responsible.
