Inmates' hair was trimmed during Thursday's unrest, confirms Minister

Home Minister Imran Abdulla has confirmed that some inmate's hair was trimmed and shaven during the unrest that took place in Maafushi Prison last Thursday.

The incident saw several inmates and Correction's officers injured.

Speaking to the media during his visit to Maafushi Prison on Saturday, Minister Imran said sometimes inmate's hair is trimmed as a consequence of creating unrest. The same practice was followed following Thursday's incident, the Minister said.

"Their heads were not shaven, it was trimmed. We do not believe it is an acceptable action, we do not believe that force should be used in that manner. Which is why we are assuring you that we will inquire regarding the matter and identify under who's orders the action was carried out and take necessary steps", the minister said.

Six inmates were injured during Thursday's incident, and inspectors of police are handling related action regarding the matter, he added.

The Minister noted that several details had been noted regarding the provision of medical attention to the injured inmates, and it has been identified that there were delays in giving necessary medical treatment to the inmates. All negligence will be identified and action will be taken accordingly.

Minister Imran further said in case of emergency situation, the minimum amount of force should be used to control the situation, however, excessive force was used on Thursday.
