Judicial watchdog to investigate delays in court proceedings

Judicial Service Commission (JSC) will be looking into delays in court proceedings to identify if there is any negligence involved on the part of the presiding judge to cause the delays.

Speaking at a press conference following Wednesday's JSC sitting, Director of the commission Hassan Zaheen noted that the commission has been receiving complaints that court proceedings of some cases are excessively lengthy. Therefore, the commission will be launching a probe to identify the reason behind delays in concluding the cases, and will investigate if the presiding judges are responsible for the delays.

Disciplinary investigations will be conducted into the judge in the event that the commission finds the delays are due to the judge, said Zaheen.

While a three member committee has been established to look into the matter, the committee will be investigating all courts of Maldives, beginning with the Criminal Court.
