Pres Solih assures continued operation of Islamic University

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has assured that the government would continue the operation of Islamic University of Maldives (IUM).

The president made the announcement in a tweet amid public concerns over several parliament members, including those from main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) calling to merge the Islamic University as a faculty under the Maldives National University (MNU).

Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, religiously conservative Adaalath party and Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Ahmed Zahir have also voiced their concerns over the potential merge.

President Solih's tweet assured that the operation of IUM was part of the government's policy, and said that the government would not close any doors on any educational opportunities.
