Maldivian Ambassador to United Arab Emirates, Dr. Hussain Niyaaz has been appointed as the Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
Dr. Niyaz presented his credentials to the Director-General of IRENA Mr. Francesco La Camera at a ceremony held at the Headquarters of IRENA in Abu Dhabi.
Ambassador Niyaaz is the first Permanent Representative of the Maldives to be accredited to IRENA since the Maldives became a Member State of IRENA in 2009.
During the ceremony held today at the Headquarters of IRENA, Ambassador Niyaaz mentioned the Maldives considers its approach towards renewable energy as a cornerstone of the Maldives’ broader environment policy, and committed to work closely with IRENA to achieve the objectives of the organization and towards achieving the objective of carbon neutrality in the Maldives.
The International Renewable Energy Agency is an intergovernmental organisation that was formally established in January 2009 to support countries in their efforts to transit to a more sustainable energy future, and serves as the primary platform for international cooperation on a number of areas that encourages the adoption of renewable energy. At present, IRENA has over 160 Member States.
Since becoming a member of IRENA, the Maldives have contributed actively to the work of the organisation. In October 2017, the inaugural meeting of the Renewable Island Energy (IRIE) was held in the Maldives, and Maldives continues to be represented at the various meetings of IRENA.
