Pres Solih attends opening ceremony for the 10th Indian Ocean Island Games

As a part of their ongoing trip to Mauritius on invitation of the Mauritius government, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and First lady Fazna Ahmed attended the opening ceremony of Indian Ocean Island Games 2019 (IOIG) opening ceremony held on Friday at Port Louis in Mauritius.

The cermeony was attended by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and First lady Fazna Ahmed to offer encouragement and support to the Maldivian athletes who are taking part in the games. President and the first lady will be attending several of the games in the next few days. Maldives athletes are set to take part in 14 games in this years Indian Ocean Island Games.

The first gold medal in a sports event was won by Maldives in the first Indian Ocean Island Games, 40 years ago. Maldives is also a founder member of the Indian Ocean Island Games.

The Maldives won its first international medal in an international sporting event at the first ever IOIG, 40 years ago.

The Maldives is seeking to host the 11th edition of the IOIG due to be held in 2023. The results of the voting for the next host will be announced at the closing ceremony of the current games.
