Three individuals from general public apply for JSC membership

Three individuals have applied for membership of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) from among the general public.

Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed announced during Tuesday's parliament sitting that three individuals applied for the slot, as the tenure of the current public representative at JSC comes to a close.

The three names have been forwarded to the Parliament's Judiciary Committee for evaluation, and the appointment will be made by the parliament.

A person has to be over 25 years of age, and must not hold a political post to be eligible for JSC membership. The applicant must not have been convicted fraud, bribery or an offence for which a 'Hadd' is prescribed in Shariah Law.

The three individuals who applied for the position are Khalid Gasim, Zubair Ahmed Manik and Mirufath Faiz.

The JSC is comprised of ten members, including the Speaker of the Parliament, a judge of the Supreme Court, a judge of the High Court, a judge of the Lower Courts, a member of the Parliament, a member of the general public, the President of the Civil Service Commission, a person appointed by the President, the Attorney General, and a lawyer elected from among the lawyers licensed to practice in the Maldives.
