'The current govt has failed', claims ex-pres Yameen

Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom has stated that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's government has failed and that it is time for the government to step down.

Speaking at a rally held by the opposition on Thursday night, President Yameen said the government 'harbored' Abdulla Luthufee, the mastermind behind the 1988 coup attempt that killed 19 Maldivians, for two months in the Maldivian embassy in Sri Lanka. This is the biggest atrocity that the government could commit, and should step down for the act alone, said Yameen.

"No government in the world should believe that their government can continue to persist after committing such an atrocity. If the administration believes in democratic principles, they should immediately step down. The citizens will not accept a government that has committed such an injustice", said Yameen.

The former president further said the government has done a good job of hoodwinking the people and pulling the wool over their eyes. The government has not done any act that would benefit the people, and the country continues to decline economically, said Yameen.

"The current administration continues to claim that they have done more than what we did during our administration. What they have succeeded in doing more is deceiving the people and selling them dreams. It is not that they have not done anything, it has now become clear that they are incapable of doing anything [pf benefit]" said Yameen.

Yameen further claimed that the current administration is not capable of devising development strategies, and the development plan the administration speaks of will not be put into action even by the end of their five year tenure. The current government continues to seek documents from the previous administration as they do not have any idea on how to plan development projects, he added.

"[They say] they are unable to carry out the projects because they cannot find certain documents from when we were running the administration. They continue to rummage through the drawers in hopes of finding a book on how to implement projects. The people will not tolerate their failure for long", he spoke passionately.

Yameen went on to say that the current government now speaks of implementing his administration's policies once again. The present administration will rename infrastructural projects that were implemented by Yameen's government to pass it off as their own projects, said Yameen.

"The flats we constructed are now 'too small'. Now they are attempting to remodel the flats and pass it off as their project. Similarly, they recently renamed Rasrani Bageecha as Sultan Park and opened the park - What a huge project the government has accomplished!", criticized Yameen.
