Maldives Media Council (MSC) is investigating a complaint that Maldives Police Service obstructed media officials while former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor was being escorted to Court last Thursday.
A statement released by MSC said the council made a collective decision to investigate the matter further, and established a committee for the purpose.
The statement further said the council is mandated to eliminate challenges faced by the media in carrying out their responsibilities, and to ensure that an independent environment is provided for the journalists. The council will thoroughly investigate the matter at hand and take action accordingly, they said.
A video that reportedly shows police obstructing media while Adeeb was being taken to court has been circulating on social media. The video shows police asking media to step away from the area.
