Ahmed Shareef defeats Judge Hailam; wins JSC seat

Chief Magistrate of Laamu Judicial Department, Ahmed Shareef has been elected as the lower courts representative to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

Ali Shareef received 127 votes while Chief Judge of Criminal Court Ahmed Hailam received a mere 37 votes in the election held on Saturday to appoint a member. The remaining contender, Abdul Razzaq Mohamed from GDh. Fiyori Magistrate Court received a single vote.

All lower Courts Judges are eligible to take part in the vote to elect a lower court representative from among themselves. While 167 judges took part in Saturday's vote, 178 judges were eligible to vote in the election.

A new member is being elected due to the term of current lower courts representative, Juvenile Court's Judge Mohamed Eesa's term coming to an end on 27th August.

The 10-member Judicial Service Commission consist of the The Speaker of the Speaker of the People’s Majlis, a Judge of the Supreme Court, a Judge of the High Court, a Judge of the Lower Courts, a member of the People’s Majlis, a member of the general public, the President of the Civil Service Commission, a person appointed by the President, the Attorney General, and a lawyer elected from among the lawyers
licensed to practice in the Maldives.
