'Will maintain a registry of those seeking employment'

Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has revealed that main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) intends to make a law on maintaining a registry of those seeking employment.

The former president of Maldives made his remark while speaking at the ceremony held to kick off MDP's Youth Congress 2019.

In his speech, Nasheed said the number of youth who are unemployed, and addicted to drugs is high, and assured that the government will find a way to address their issues.

Nasheed said it is of utmost important for the government to establish a minimum wage in order to provide the best benefits for those employed.

"When we went door to door, the main complaint was inadequate wages. Complaints that no overtime and allowances were being paid. It is important to establish a minimum wage as a service for the youth", said Nasheed.

Nasheed further highlighted that the number of people who had been victims of sexual abuse and drug addiction was high, and emphasized the importance of implementing government policies to give attention to such people.

Nasheed also said that the youth today face many challenges, and it is clear to the government what policies should be implemented to assist the youth in overcoming these challenges. He also said that instead of belittling youth, the spirit of working with the youth will be promoted.

"Most of the youth have faced some form of hardship. They wish to become better. The government will work with them to overcome the challenges they face", said Nasheed.
