Govt encourages women's involvement in economic industry

Gender Minister Shidhaatha Shareef stated that it is an aim of government to involve women in the field of economy by increasing opportunities for women to start businesses.

Inaugurating 'Sustainable Growth of Women's Entrepreneurs & Export Promotion' (SWEEP 2019) conference organised by Association of Women's Entrepreneurs (MAVE) being held in India, Minister Shidhaatha said two of the most important sectors of the Maldivian economy are the tourism and fishing industries. The government of Maldives aims to empower and increase the involvement of women in these fields, said Shidhaatha.

Noting the role of women in policy making and implementing it, Shidhaatha said women are working at senior posts at ministries and entities that makes policies on economy and business in the Maldives.

The governments aims to encourage women entrepreneurs, especially those in islands by facilitating small loans and mobile banking services, added the Minister.

Shidhaatha further revealed that the gender equality policy and gender equality action plan being put together by the Gender Ministry is nearing completion. Once the policy is in effect, it will allow equal opportunities for men and women in economic development, said the minister.

Minister Shidhaatha is leading the 21 member Maldives team participating at SWEEP 2019. The conference will conclude on September 8.
