Foreign Minister to undertake first official visit to China

Foreign Ministry has revealed that Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid will undertake an official visit to China from 19th-20th September 2019. This is the first official visit of Minister Shahid to China since he assumed office.

The Ministry further revealed that Minister Shahid is visiting China on the invitation of Wang Yi, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China. During his two-day visit, he will pay a courtesy call on Wang Qishan, Vice President of the People’s Republic of China.

Minister Shahid will hold bilateral talks with his counterpart Minister Wang Yi. They will review the gamut of bilateral relations between the two countries as well as discuss ways to sustain and further strengthen the longstanding union and actively contribute to that through joint collaboration in various sectors.

Under former President Abdulla Yameen's reign, the Maldivian government flourished due to the strong ties with Chin. Maldives received aid through grants and loans, bolstering the archipelago's economic development.

The current administration has stated that China remains an important partner to the development of Maldives. The Government of Maldives reiterated its firm and unwavering commitment to its long-standing One China Policy and its support as a partner in the Belt and Road Initiative.
