President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that the administration’s policies were centered on combating drug addiction, stopping all forms of peddling and drug trafficking.

Addressing at the National Drug Agency's Open Day 2019 held Saturday at Social Center, President Solih said that the alleviation of the drug abuse problem is a top priority of the administration.

President Solih further emphasized on the importance of protecting the society from the dangerous influence of drugs, and noted that the government would work on providing drug-addiction treatment and rehabilitation back into the society to transform those under the influence to functional members of the society.

We will not falter in the search for those liable for drug trafficking, drug trade, and the destruction of our youth. We will not stop until we shut them down.

Additionally, President Solih noted the importance of social responsibility in the efforts to protect our community from the influence of drugs. He stated that this would bring positive results at a much more rapid pace.

The government has decided that individuals involved in drug usage and drug trade will be brought in and sent to the drug offender remand center situated in Gulhifalhu. This will facilitate arrested drug abusers and peddlers with basic necessities and medical care while under constant police monitoring. Until now, it has not been enforced although the enforcement is stipulated in the Anti-drug Policy.

He further stated that they were currently working on making amendments to the policy based on the generational circumstance, and that discussions will be held in parliament regarding better ways to enforce and structure the policy this year.

The President highlighted the challenges of providing proper treatment for juvenile drug abuse and delinquency; something which required special attention and dedicated remand and rehabilitation centres. He announced that work to establish such a centre will commence later this year, along with training of personnel who will provide the necessary training and education to allow for successful reintegration into society.

President Solih added that the most vital part of eradicating drugs and saving our community would be to put a stop to the smuggling of drugs into the country. He emphasized that those individuals and institutions involved in stopping the trade of drugs into the country have to act more responsibly, and honestly.
