President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said he has a solid plan to successfully solve the drug problem faced by the Maldives.
Speaking at a campaign rally at Noonu Maalhendhoo, President Solih said the drug problem is the biggest plague facing the entire country. Noting that Maalhendhoo, too is grappling with the issue, President Solih said the drug trade is widespread in the Maldives, expressing deep concern over the exploitation of children for drug peddling.
Asserting that he has no political ambitions to stay in power and that his bid for election was purely in the interest of the country, President Solih said his only goal would be to bring development to the people if he is re-elected.
"I will have no political objectives in the next term. You will see the Maldives transform by the end of the second term," he said.
The President projected robust growth in the tourism sector in the next term. He also highlighted the pivotal role that President Ahmed Siam of the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), an ally of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), would play in advancing the tourism industry.
The President welcomed constructive criticism and encouraged individuals with objections to his campaign to engage with him directly. He said that his campaign team is well-prepared and would unveil further policy policies soon.
The President compared his administration to previous administrations and said they conducted themselves differently from the current government. He recalled a period from 2013 to 2018 when any person who expressed views that did not align with the government was jailed.
The President shared specific pledges for Maalhendhoo if he wins a second term. He announced plans to upgrade the Maalhendhoo Health Center to a 24-hour facility with a new laboratory and committed to constructing an additional harbor and a volleyball court for the island.
