Foreign Minister meets VP of AIIB

Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid has met with the Vice President of Asian Infrastructure Bank (AIIB) and Chief Investment Officer D. Jagathisa Pandian.

The meeting was held during Shahid's official visit to China, at AIIB headquarters in the capital, Beijing. According to the Foreign Ministry, Minister Shahid briefed on the government’s economic agenda and exchanged views on ways to enhance cooperation between the bank. Vice President Pandian assured the support of AIIB in assisting the Government of Maldives towards achieving its development agenda.

Ahmed Khaleel, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed, Secretary, Multilateral and Aishath Azeema, Ambassador of Maldives in China and members of the Maldives delegation also attended the meeting.

On his first official visit to China, Shahid will also be meeting with the country's Vice President Wang Qishan and Foreign Minister Wang Yi to hold talks on ways to further strengthen the bilateral relations between both countries.

During former President Abdulla Yameen's regime, the Maldives flourished in terms of infrastructural development due to the strong ties with China. Maldives received aid through grants and loans, bolstering the archipelago's economic development.

The current administration has stated that China remains an important partner to the development of Maldives. The Government of Maldives has reiterated its firm and unwavering commitment to its long-standing One China Policy and its support as a partner in the Belt and Road Initiative.
