State expenditure on subsidies has reached over MVR 900 million.
The Weekly Fiscal Development Report issued by Finance Ministry show MVR 912.1 million out of the allocated MRV 1262.7 million has been utilized from the budget as subsidy.
A large expenditure is incurred on subsidies under the current framework of the government. The government gives subsidies for state owned enterprises to subsidize goods provided for the public, including staple food, electricity, fuel and waste management. A large amount is also handed over to MIFCO to provide funds for fishermen.
The amount spent on subsidies have increased with new policies being followed by the current administration, which includes subsidies for higher education and school breakfast program.
