Foreign Minister Shahid meets Japanese counterpart

Minister of Foreign Affair Abdulla Shahid met with his Japanese counterpart Motegi Toshimitsu in Tokyo on Monday.

The Foreign Ministry said Minister Shahid conveyed greetings on the historic occasion of the enthronement of His Imperial Majesty Naruhito during the meeting. Minister Shahid also congratulated on Mr. Motegi’s recent appointment as the Foreign Minister of Japan. Furthermore, Minister also expressed sympathies to the Government and the people of Japan, on the devastation and loss of lives caused due to the Typhoon Hagibis and reaffirmed strong support of the Government and the people of the Maldives at this difficult time, revealed the Ministry.

The two Foreign Ministers held discussions on further expanding the cooperation between the two countries in areas relating to economic and social development of Maldives. Foreign Minister Shahid expressed appreciation to the people and Government of Japan for the continued support to the Maldives throughout its development journey. In addition to economic cooperation, both Ministers also discussed regional and global issues of mutual interest including maritime cooperation, said the Ministry.

Minister Shahid is accompanying President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on the on-going official visit to Japan from 20-27 October 2019 to attend the Enthronement Ceremony of His Majesty Emperor Naruhito of Japan.
