A former CP involved in MMPRC corruption: Police

Maldives Police Service have revealed that the officers they are investigating for alleged involvement in the MMPRC graft include a former commissioner of police.

Earlier this week, the police revealed that their Professional Command has been investigating some officers for their alleged involvement in the MMPRC scandal since October 13. However, not much details were disclosed at the time.

Speaking at a joint press conference held by police, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and Asset Recovery Commission on Thursday, Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed said while the involvement of seven officers are suspected, a former police commissioner and assistant police commissioner are also included.

While their names were not revealed, CP Hameed said the list of people who gained profit from the scandal will not be revealed at the time due to ongoing investigation. He added that some of the suspects have been questioned by the police, and said that the authority would continue to question those whose involvement is suspected.

The police said although it was previously believed 177 people received funds through the graft, new information show the number of people who received embezzled funds reach 267.

This includes seven government officials, 16 members of the current parliament, 44 members of the 18th Parliament, and eight judges currently employed at Maldivian courts, said Assistant CP Mohamed Riyaz.
