241 committee to further investigate Dr.Afrasheem's murder

Parliament has decided to forward the report prepared by Presidential Commission Investigating Murders and Enforced Disappearances on former MP Dr. Afrasheem Ali's murder to the committee on National Security Services (241 committee) for further research.

The report prepared by the commission has been published by the government on the official website of the President's Office. A summary of the report was read at the Parliament on Sunday.

During a commiitee meeting held to review the report on Monday, Henveiru Hulhangu MP Hassan Latheef proposed to look into seven issues linked to Afrasheem's murder. The committee made a unanimous decision to review the issues.

A sub committee was formed to gather information from relevant authorities, and review the data. The sub committee is comprised of Henveiru Hulhangu MP Hassan Latheef, Fares-Maathoda MP Hussein Mohamed Latheef, and Maduvvari MP Adam Shareef Umar.

The 241 committee has been tasked with:

- Identifying the number of extremist organisations in the Maldives as indicated in the commission's report
- Details of financial transactions associated with the murder.
- Compiling a list of extremist organizations and taking necessary legal action against them.
- Identifying who was aware of the plans to murder Dr. Afrasheem and failed to disclose the information
- Identifying if any police negligence had taken place in handling the case
- Locating those named in the report as people who orchestrated the murder
- Encouraging action regarding the report, and observing whether action is taken

Dr. Afrasheem was found brutally murdered in the stairwell of his residence on 1st October 2012. According to the report publicized by the Presidential Commission, the murder of Dr. Afrasheem Ali was orchestrated by a radical extremist organisation. The report named Hussain Humaam of H. Lobby, who has already been convicted for the murder, Ali 'Sato' Shaan, Azlif Rauf, and a minor.
