Seven Sri Lankan boats trespassing in Maldivian waters caught

Seven Sri Lankan fishing boats trespassing in Maldivian waters have been detained.

Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) said they received information of the seven boats trespassing in Maldivian territory on November 21. The information was reported by a local vessel to the Coast Guard Maritime Rescue Coordination Center, said the police.

A special operation was carried out after the information was received, during which the seven boats were intercepted 175 nautical miles off capital Male'. Two of the boats were using fishing nets at the time of interception.

The police are working to bring in the boats to Male'. Relevant authorities have commenced investigation into the case.

Numerous fishing boats from Sri Lanka and India enter Maldivian territory every year.
