Nasheed hails Mahatma Gandhi as the biggest source of inspiration for freedom lovers

Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has stated that India's Mahatma Gandhi inspired a generation of young Maldivians to rise and change their country to a multi-party democracy.

A delegation of Maldivian parliamentarians including Speaker Nasheed are currently on an official visit to the neighbouring nation. On Monday, the delegation visited Gandhi's mausoleum as part of the visit.

Nasheed wrote his sentiments on Gandhi in a guest book at the mausoleum during his visit.

In his message, he wrote that Gandhi's principles, philosophy and actions remains the biggest inspiration for freedom fighters all over the world, especially in the Maldives.

"So many years after Gandhiji was laid to rest, a generation of young Maldivians are yet again inspired to rise and change their country to a multi party democracy in 2008, and to maintain and consolidate that democracy. It indeed is a pleasure to visit Gandhiji's Maqbara," wrote Nasheed.

Mohondas Karamchand Gandhi was an Indian anti-colonial nationalist who became the leader of the successful nationalist movement against the British rule of India. He employed nonviolent resistance in his campaign for India's independence. His actions inspire movements for civil rights and freedom across the world.
