Mayor of Male' City Shifa Mohamed has stated that a permanent solution to the flooding that occurs in capital Male' following heavy rainfall will reached next year.
Heavy rainfall on Wednesday morning caused the streets of Male' city to become flooded. While the public has been facing several challenges due to the unresolved issue for years, criticism was targeted towards the City Council and the government on Wednesday due to the flooding.
Acknowledging the concerns of the public, Mayor Shifa published a tweet that said that while previous governments had failed to address and resolve the issue in the last seven years, the current City Council had come up with a solution to the flooding issue within an year.
Criticising the former government in her tweet, Mayor Shifa said a budget of MVR 79 million has been allocated in the budget for 2020 to implement the plan.
"We have the plans ready with a solution that can be put into effect within a year," revealed Mayor Shifa in a tweet.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in November instructed authorities to implement the Male' City Streetscaping development plan.
The newly proposed initiative will revise the streets of the capital in a methodical manner to ensure safety and ease of access for both pedestrians and vehicles using the streets.
The ambitious plan proposed by the government is backed by the Male’ City Council. The plan envisions the streets of Male’ greener, safer and functionally convenient for pedestrians and vehicles.
President's Office had revealed that the the Malé City Streetscaping Development Plan addresses the most pressing urban issues faced by the residents of the city. The plan, worth MVR 462 million, proposes the redevelopment of streets of Malé in a methodical manner and ensures citywide development focussing on easing congestion, opening up more paths for pedestrians and encouraging walking.
The proposed plan includes a breakdown of all the streets of Malé City and improved design elements incorporated to enhance the city streets. These include dedicated parking spaces for all wards of Malé City, pilot project on public transport, integration of underground network pipelines carrying essential utility services and storm water management system, said the President's Office.
