The bill on the minimum wage will be presented to the parliament during the first term of 2020.
Economic Minister Fayyaz Ibrahim took to Twitter to reveal that the two research reports prepared by the Minimum Wage Board together with the International Labour Organization (ILO) were received by the minister on Monday. The reports will be presented to the cabinet, and later to the parliament during its first term of 2020, said the minister.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih established a minimum wage advisory board earlier this year under efforts to establish a minimum wage in the Maldives. The board has conducted a broad enterprise survey to collect data and has obtained all relevant data from relevant government entities.
It is a key pledge of President Solih to establish a minimum wage in the Maldives. Main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) proposed minimum wage requirements in their Agenda 19 manifesto to fulfill the pledge.
