Parliament to investigate actions of Broadcom president

Meedhoo MP Rozaina Adam has stated that the parliament will investigate the actions of the President of the Broadcasting Commission, Mariyam Waheeda when it convenes next year following its current recess.

Mariyam Waheeda on Tuesday hosted a tourism event organized by the government to celebrate present government's 100-day achievements related the tourism, which prompted many to question the integrity of the broadcasting commission.

According to the Broadcasting Act, members elected to the commission shall be unbiased and maintain autonomy, when performing the duties and responsibilities of members in accordance with the Commission's rules and public opinion.

While Mariyam Waheeda presenting an event organized by the government compromises the impartiality of the independent commission, the chair of the parliament committee on independent institutions, Rozaina said the matter will be investigated when the parliament reconvenes after recess.

"The committee on independent institutions will not hesitate to undertake any efforts necessary to uphold the public's trust in independent commissions," MP Rozaina assured.

Former member of the Broadcasting Commission Fathmath Zeyna came under fire in the past when she presented an event organized for senior citizens by the previous government. While she was summoned to the parliament and questioned on her actions, she was later dismissed from the commission on claims that she supported the government.
