Three MDP MPs express interest in Deputy Speaker role

Three MPs from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) have expressed interest in assuming the role of the Deputy Speaker of the Parliament.

The post became vacant by the recent resignation of former Speaker Eva Abdulla amidst a no-confidence motion against her. A new Deputy Speaker will be elected at a Parliament session scheduled for 8:30 pm tonight.

Those interested in the post include Addu Meedhoo MP Rozaina Adam, Kaashidhoo MP Abdulla Jabir, and Hoarafushi MP Ahmed Saleem.

Rozaina is the longest-serving member of Parliament among the MDP candidates vying for the deputy speaker's seat. Her parliamentary tenure dates back to 2009, and she was also a member of the Special Assembly responsible for drafting the current Green Constitution.

The MDP Parliamentary Group is scheduled to meet today to determine which MP would be backed by the party for the Deputy Speaker post. The decision will be made through a secret ballot.
