MP Jabir's MDP ticket revoked; expelled from party

Kaashidhoo MP Abdulla Jabir has been expelled from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), the main opposition party. His expulsion comes just as he was preparing to contest the upcoming parliamentary election under the party's banner.

In a statement, the MDP said Jabir was expelled from the party as a member and candidate of the party for repeatedly violating societal norms. This included communicating with the public in vulgar language and engaging in behaviors deemed detrimental to the interests of the people.

"The party's action committee has decided not to allow Abdulla Jabir to contest the 20th parliamentary elections under the party's banner and to expel him from the party from the party effective immediately," the statement said.

The statement further noted that Jabir has requested to rejoin the MDP but that the request will have to be submitted to the party's National Assembly for consideration. The actions committee has also decided not to allow Jabir to contest any party post or primary for the next five years if he is allowed to rejoin the party.
