Renewable energy systems in use in 48 islands

Hybrid renewable energy systems have been integrated into power systems in 48 islands.

Environment Ministry on Thursday said the hybrid systems have been installed and are now in use in 48 islands.

The government is working together with Asian Development Bank (ADB) to transform existing diesel-based energy mini grids into hybrid renewable energy systems under 'Preparing Outer Islands for Sustainable Energy Development' (POISED) project.

This is the largest energy sector intervention for the Maldives covering 160 inhabited islands within 20 atolls across Maldives. The intended outcome of the POISED project is for Maldives to shift towards clean and cost-effective energy sources by 2022.
