Kulhudhuffushi to be considered an island for upcoming council elections

Elections Commission has revealed that a seven-member island council will be elected to Hdh. Kulhudhuffushi.

Efforts are currently underway to classify Kulhudhuffushi island to a city. The government has stated that Kulhudhuffushi will be classified and declared as a city very soon.

The upcoming local council election slated for April 4th, 2020 will be electing officials for a five-year term. While councillors are being elected for such a long term, the public has been left wondering if Kulhudhuffushi will be considered as an island or a city for the upcoming election.

Addressing the concerns, Commissioner of Elections Ahmed Shareef said seven council members will be elected to Kulhudhuffushi council. The Elections Commission has not been informed whether Kuhudhuffushi has been declared a city, said Shareef.

"In this election [local council election], seven councillors will be elected to Hdh. Kulhudhuffushi. We do not know whether the island has been classified and declared as a city," said Shareef.

During the 'Viyavathi Raajje' councillor's symposium recently held at Crossroads Maldives, members of the Kulhudhuffushi council had questioned the government regarding the classification of the island as a city. They also inquired how the capital island of the atoll will be designated when the island is declared as a city.

In answer to their inquiries, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had stated that special arrangements and work are underway for Kulhudhuffushi. What will follow the classification of the island as a city is clearly written in the law, said the president.

"A city is being established in Hdh. atoll. The law clearly states what will happen when Kulhudhuffushi is declared as a city," said the president.
