Opposition departs to Laamu atoll for council campaign

A team from opposing Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and Peoples' National Congress (PNC) has departed to Laamu atoll to campaign for the upcoming local council elections.

At a press conference held by the PPM-PNC coalition at Velana International Airport (VIA) on Sunday night, President of PNC Abdul Raheem Abdulla said campaign efforts of the coalition are ongoing in full force within the atolls, and efforts are already underway in Addu City, GDh., Ga., and Thaa atoll.

Additionally, the visit to Laamu atoll is under efforts to campaign for the council elections slated for April, and to gather signatures for the petition calling to free opposition leader former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom who is currently jailed for money laundering, said Abdul Raheem.

"We want to acknowledge the work being done by PPM-PNC supporters in the atolls and thank them for their efforts. President Yameen himself is especially appreciative. He remains committed," said the former Fonadhoo MP.

The opposition on Sunday night held a rally in Dh. Kudahuvadhoo. A rally will also be organised during the visit to Laamu atoll.
