Secretary-General of main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Anas Abdul Sattar has announced his decision to run for Male' City Mayor in the upcoming local council election.
In a tweet published on Sunday, Anas said he wished to make Male' a peaceful and prosperous place for its residents to live in, and that he hopes to address and resolve the challenges faced by the people in the city. Therefore, he will be contesting in the upcoming MDP primary to earn a ticket to vie for mayor in the council election.
Several senior members of MDP have expressed their interest in contesting in the party primary for mayor, including current mayor Shifa Mohamed, Deputy Mayor Shamau Shareef and Henveiru Dhekunu connstituency member, Ahmed Niyaz. The MDP primary scheduled for January 31st is expected to be highly competitive.
Deputy President of opposing Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and former Housing Minister Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, and former MP Alhan Fahmy have announced their decision to contest for mayor.
The local council election is slated for April 4, 2020.
