Deputy Minister of Education Sharuma Naseer has stated that teachers required for all schools in Maldives were appointed in time for the beginning of the new academic year.
In a press conference held Sunday to provide information on the preparations undertaken by the ministry in preparation of the new academic year, the deputy minister said all teachers were appointed and present in time for the new academic year, including foreign teachers.
"All teachers needed for the schools for 2020 have been assigned, and foreign teachers have also been assigned as requested by schools," said Sharuma.
Sharuma revealed that while requests were made at the ministry to attain 251 foreign teachers, all requests except 6 requests for Quran teachers were fulfilled before the beginning of the year. The positions of the remaining six teachers have also been filled and the teachers have already been deployed to the islands, said the deputy minister.
Deputy Minister Sharuma acknowledged that the ministry had faced difficulties in hiring teachers in the past, and said that the ministry was successfully able to hire teachers to fill all vacancies.
Last year, religiously conservative Arabiyya School faced issues with hiring teachers with exams looming up ahead. While the parents of the school's students filed several complaints, the Ministry of Education had examined the issue. Minister of Education Dr. Aishath Ali during Sunday's press conference revealed that the new academic year kicked off with all teachers required for the school appointed and present, and that all the books required for the school's students were provided on time.
"Arabiyya School is a success story," said the minister.
The new academic year kicked off on January 12, Sunday.
