Govt to extend financial assistance to students in Wuhan

Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid has revealed that the government will be extending financial assistance to the Maldivian students in Wuhan, China.

Six Maldivian students are currently in Wuhan, Hubei Province which is under lockdown due to an outbreak of coronavirus. The Foreign Ministry on Friday said the government is making arrangements to evacuate the students from the city.

In a tweet posted Saturday, the minister assured that the government is in consultation with the Chinese government to relocate the Maldivian students in Wuhan. However, this is a major challenge as the city is under lockdown as per a protocol announced by the Chinese government to minimise the spread of the virus.

However, the government will be providing financial assistance to the students, he said.

"Considering the escalation of prices, Government has decided to extend financial assistance to them," wrote the minister.

The Foreign Ministry has previously stated that they are closely monitoring the Maldivian students in China through the Maldivian Embassy in China. While all six students are in good health, the embassy is checking up on Maldivians across China, said the ministry.
