Coronavirus: Maldives strengthens screening process

Tourism minister Ali Waheed has revealed that additional cameras are being utilised to strengthen the screening process for coronavirus at Velana International Airport (VIA).

While only one thermal camera was being used at VIA until now, Health Minister Abdulla Ameen had previously stated that the government was in the process of acquiring additional thermal cameras. During a press conference held at the President's Office on Sunday, the tourism minister said new cameras were acquired on January 31, although he did not reveal the number of cameras added.

Minister Ali Waheed assured that all arrivals at VIA will now be screened thoroughly, and said the process will be strengthened further in the upcoming days. In this regard, four extra cameras and additional personnel to handle and operate the cameras will arrive in the Maldives on Tuesday, said the minister.

“All points of entries to the Maldives are now being screened using thermal camera. We are bringing additional camera sets and personnel to operate them on February 4. As you are aware, infected cases of the virus are being detected in countries other than China. The president has urged us to strengthen the screening process further," said minister Ali Waheed.
