Govt to develop six additional airports by end of term

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has revealed that the government aims to develop six airports in the archipelago within the next four years.

Delivering his presidential address at the Parliament on Monday, President Solih said one of the most vital aspects of the country's development was establishing an efficient transport network. While the government pays special attention to establish such a system both for sea and air transport, six additional airports will be developed within the next four years, said the president.

The president said under the first phase of the project, the government will begin new routes to Ha., HDh, and Sh. atolls. In this regard, service will be commenced this year to these destinations by utilizing safe, speedy and energy efficient vessels and vehicles, revealed the president.

The government established a large number of domestic airports during the administration of former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom. While the development of Maafaru Airport and Kulhudhuffushi Airport were initiated by the former administration, the airports are now open and operational. Currently, the development of airports at Ha. Hoarafushi, GDh. Faresmathoda and Funadhoo are ongoing. While the Funadhoo airport is expected to be completed and opened by March 1, the total number of airports in the Maldives will reach 13 within the year.
