Govt fully exercises separation of powers: Pres

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said that while a year has passed for the current government began administration, and the 19th parliament having served eight months, Maldives has shown a a commendable example of the three branches of the State functioning independently, extending support and holding each other accountable.

Delivering the presidential address at the parliament on Monday, President Solih said the citizens of the country reap the benefits of state institutions upholding democratic values. If the branches of the State exercise power within their constitutional prerogatives, the people of the Maldives will gain even more benefit, said the president.

The president said forty nine bills had been submitted to the current, 19th parliament last year, of which the parliament passed 27 bills. Revealing the government’s intention to submit 56 bills to the parliament during the first half of this year, the president said 32 bills will propose amendments to existing laws and 24 bills are set to create entirely new laws.

"I am confident that this esteemed Majlis will provide its unwavering support in our effort to pass these bill," said President Solih.

The president extended his sincere gratitude to the parliament for its support and cooperation and thanked the Honorable Speaker of Majlis, President Nasheed, the Honorable Deputy Speaker of the People’s Majlis, Eva Abdulla, and all Honourable members of parliament.
