Leasing seaplane terminal at unreasonably lower price is corruption: MP Usham

MP of Vilimale’ and former Deputy Attorney Ahmed Usham has said that leasing the new seaplane terminal to Trans Maldivian Air (TMA) at an unreasonably lower price is an act of corruption.

The government have decided to allocate 5,583 square meters of the terminal to TMA on Wednesday for two years at USD 10.35 per meter. However, after two years, TMA has to acquire the pier at the market rate.

Referring to the issue, Usham said it is a violation of law to act such a way that it will generate less income for the government and that it is corruption.

A statement issued by the Finance Ministry on Wednesday disclosed the seaplane terminal is developed by Maldives Airports Company (MACL) under the guarantorship of the government. While the project is an integral part of airport expansion and development, seaplane operators play a vital role in the sustainability of the tourism industry of the Maldives. Hence, it is essential to provide the infrastructure needed for the seaplane operators and make the terminal useful for all the operators.

“…to achieve this objective, MACL developed the terminal by acquiring a loan, and the government have made some decisions regarding the matter which have been shared with MACL’s board,” stated the Ministry of Finance.

There was a rumour that the new terminal that is being developed is to be handed over to TMA. However, the government and MACL have denied the rumours. Similarly, the Audit Office has conducted a special audit on the new terminal.

As per the report, 5,382 square meters shall be allocated to TMA from the new terminal. This is expected to generate USD 33 million (MVR 508n million). However, if the terminal operation is handed over to TMA, the government will get measly USD 41 million.
