Former Manchester United midfielder Maroune Fellaini who recently holidayed in the Maldives has tested positive for COVID-19.
Authorities in the Maldives have now begun contact tracing for those who may have come in contact with the footballer in the archipelago.
Fellaini tested positive for the virus on Friday after he traveled to China following his holiday at One&Only Reethi Rah Island of the Maldives.
Speaking at a press conference held Sunday, Government Spokesperson for COVID-19 related matters, Mabrook Azeez said Fellaini had arrived in the Maldives on March 8 and departed on March 12. While he had tested positive for the virus on March 20, the earliest possible date that he may have contracted the disease is March 6, said Mabrook. However, it is believed that the footballer contracted the virus after his departure from the Maldives, he added.
Mabrook further said while contact tracing is currently ongoing, one person has already been placed in isolation.
13 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in the Maldives thus far. All are foreigners who are either working or vacationing in the Maldives. While three patients have already recovered from the infection, a week has passed since no new cases have been identified in the Maldives.
