Police arrest person for leaving resort despite restrictions

A person who swam from Fun Island Resor to Olhuveli Beach Resort has been arrested. Fun Island Resort is currently being used as an isolation facility to house those arriving in the Maldives from abroad.

The police Tuesday said the 20-year old local man was arrested while still in the lagoon of Olhuveli Beach Resort. The man is an employee at Fun Island Resort and he swam to Olhuvehi Beach Resort to purchase cigarettes, said the police. The Male’ Atoll magistrate court has issued a remand period of 15 days for his arrest.

This is the 6th person that has been arrested for violating the instructions issued by the government due to COVID-19. The government has banned travel between resorts and residential islands as a precautionary measure to contain the spread of COVID-19. Previously, a person in southernmost Addu City, two people from Fuvahmulah City, a person who travelled to a resort in Haa Alif Atoll and a person who disembarked to Hulhumale’ from a safari were arrested for violating the travel restrictions imposed by the Director General of Public Health.

13 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in the Maldives thus far. While five of the patients have made full recoveries, the number of active cases in currently eight.
