FlyMe halts passenger flights

Local airline FlyMe has temporarily halted its operations due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.

The airline said while Maldives has restricted entry to visitors from foreign countries as a precautionary measure against COVID-19, there has been a serious decline in the number of passengers, affecting the aviation industry. Therefore, the airline will be indefinitely ceasing their services effective from 29th March.

However, the airline will still continue to cater to special requests, and all crew and staff will be on stand-by for such circumstances, said the airline. The airline prioritizes the safety of its staff and passengers, said FlyMe.

FlyMe is operated under Villa Group. The group runs several resorts in the Maldives, of which all but one have been closed due to the virus outbreak. Villa Group has also decreased the salaries of its employees.
