The People’s Majlis Secretariat has stated that the Speaker of Parliament is willing to follow the Health Protection Agency's (HPA) instructions.
The government has been placing all arrivals from foreign countries in quarantine for 14 days as a precaution against the spread of COVID-19. After three locals who returned to the Maldives from the United Kingdom tested positive for COVID-19 while in quarantine, the government has decided to test all those who returned from UK between March 14 and 19 as an added precaution. The period falls on dates before the quarantine was imposed on arrivals.
A statement issued by the Secretariat of People’s Majlis said the Speaker of the parliament, Mohamed Nasheed visited the UK on a personal trip from March 11 to 14. At the time of his visit, the government had not decided to test everyone who returns from the UK, and no travel advisories were issued at the time.
However, the speaker is willing to follow any instruction of HPA, the statement further stated.
18 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in the Maldives thus far. They include three locals and fifteen foreigners. The government has decided to test all the people who are placed in the quarantine facilities even if they do not display any symptom of COVID-19.
