Health Protection Authority (HPA) has revealed that an 80-year-old person has tested positive for COVID-19. The elderly person is among the people who tested positive for the virus on Tuesday,
While 14 people have tested positive for the virus on Tuesday thus far, this includes eight Maldivians and six Bangladeshi nationals. The 80-year-old patient is now being transferred to Dharumavantha Hospital - the extension of the main government hospital Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) for further monitoring, said HPA.
This is the most elderly person who contracted the virus in the Maldives to date. Earlier on Monday, a 60-year-old tested positive for COVID-19. The remaining cases are mostly patients between ages 30 and 40. Three children have also tested positive for the virus. The government has not revealed much details about the newly identified cases. Contact tracing is currently ongoing.
Due to a spike in the infection rate, the government has been strengthening its measures to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the Maldives. The capital has been placed on lockdown and travel between the islands have also been banned. Congregational prayers in mosques across the Maldives has been suspended indefinitely. Those who travelled back to islands from Male’ over the past eight days have been instructed to self-isolate.
Maldives has registered 83 confirmed cases of COVID-19 thus far, out of which 63 are from capital Male'.
